An interdisciplinary Unil team selected for the Map the System Global Final in Oxford

2026-06-11

The team that will represent the University of Lausanne at the Map the System Global Final in Oxford has been selected. Composed of PhD candidates and a Master’s student from two different faculties, the team will represent Unil on the international stage this coming July.

The team consists of:

  • Ko Ko Maung, PhD candidate at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM)
  • Afifa Tanweer Qureshi, PhD candidate at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM)
  • Edgar Mathevet, PhD candidate at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (SSP)
  • Eléonore Hyeyoung Sun, Master’s student at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM)

Their project focuses on a major public health challenge: differences in the management and treatment of cardiovascular diseases between men and women in Switzerland. Through a systems-thinking approach, the team examines the many factors contributing to these inequalities and explores the interactions between the various stakeholders and mechanisms involved in the system.

One particularly remarkable aspect of this team is that its members met through Map the System itself. Their journey perfectly illustrates the competition’s ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and bring together individuals from diverse academic backgrounds to address complex societal challenges.

In July, the team will travel to Oxford to take part in the global final alongside students from around the world. This experience will allow them to compare their analysis with those of other teams, exchange ideas with experts from a wide range of fields, and expand their network within a community committed to tackling today’s most pressing challenges.

About Map the System

Map the System is an international competition developed by University of Oxford that aims to cultivate a new generation of decision-makers capable of better understanding the complex systems behind today’s societal challenges.

Led at Unil by the HUB Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the competition is open to Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students. It provides participants with the opportunity to develop systems-thinking skills, learn how to analyze issues holistically, and move beyond siloed approaches.

Congratulations to the entire team, and best of luck in the global final!
